Under Lovell, the Antonian boys and girls teams capped an impressive season by winning the TAPPS 5A state titles for the third consecutive year.
He set a school record with 466 rushing yards on 50 carries with five touchdowns in a 47-27 victory against Hondo in Week 10 and also had a key fumble recovery on defense.

The second time, the Mavericks pull off one of the most exciting wins in school history. Quarterback Justin Jones engineers a 75-yard game-winning drive, connecting with Byron Daniels for a touchdown and the winning 2-point conversion with 36 seconds left.
After a 1-3 record to begin the season, Streety's worst start as a head coach, he guided the Mavericks to the Class 5A Division I state semifinals and a 10-5 season.

Lanier boys basketball coach Rudy Bernal earned his 500th career victory Friday in the Voks' 46-43 win against Kennedy.
Mike Sherman's struggles to close out games contributed to him losing his job as Texas A&M's football coach, but he had no problem sealing the deal with recruits. “As a young man growing up, you want to learn from a guy like Coach Sherman,” said Addison, who will transition to wide receiver after playing quarterback at Fort Bend Hightower. Williams, a running back who led Spring Dekaney to the Class 5A Division II state title over Steele, is the Aggies' first five-star recruit in three classes. “Coach Sumlin took (Houston) to another level, and I definitely believe his offensive mind-set is going to give us an advantage,” said Matthews, the son of NFL Hall of Fame lineman Bruce Matthews. Matthews said he always has had his heart set on signing with A&M, primarily because of the chance to play with his brother, Jake, a sophomore lineman. Houston's running backs had 420 carries combined, while the team passed for an NCAA-best 6,301 yards this season.
Judson football coach Jim Rackley gave his last speech Tuesday, when he announced to his team that he’s retiring after 11 seasons leading the Rockets.
Girls player of the Week Erica Hernandez, Floresville: Guard, senior — Named MVP after averaging 29.3 points per game to help the Tigers win the Corpus Christi West Oso Holiday Tournament. Hernandez scored 38 points in an 84-47 semifinal win over state-ranked Skidmore-Tynan (Class 2A) and 25 points in a 91-43 win over Corpus Christi Calallen for the tournament title. The Southeastern Louisiana signee leads the area in scoring (23.2 ppg). Blake Hurtik

High school all-star football game involving some of the best players in the country. Sam Houston defensive lineman Javonte Magee and Smithson Valley punter Ethan Perry are on the West roster. The ninth-ranked defensive end in the nation according to Rivals.com, Magee said he expects to make his college commitment in two weeks. At the first All-American Bowl practice as strictly a punter, he had a crash course in taking it easy. “They just told me and the kicker to do your own thing since we're not really doing special teams right now,” said Perry, a TCU commit. With only a handful of chances to actually punt in practice, Perry spent his time working on his mechanics and enjoying the beautiful weather. “It's pretty nice,” said Perry, an All-Area pick who averaged 40 yards a punt this season.
Citizens committee votes against taking out track for soccer field.
With the girls basketball season around the midway point, Express-News beat writer Blake Hurtik offers up some of the top storylines from the first half: The 6-foot-1 sophomore has become the Bears' leader, averaging 12.4 points and 8.8 rebounds. At one point, the Mustangs (14-11) had four starters hurt, which contributed to a 9-9 mark in non-district play. Johnson, on pace for its first playoff berth, is piloted by point guard Recee' Caldwell (17.7 ppg), who played with the national under-16 team this summer. Southwest lost scoring machine Shana Holmes to graduation, but guard Tiffani Rodriguez has stepped in and averaged 20.5 ppg.
Ed Garza says false district information may push him to delay vote.
The biggest obstacle in star wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham's way at Saturday's U.S. Army All-American Bowl wasn't a defensive back. The catch, the longest in the all-star game's history, was good enough to earn him co-MVP honors despite having just one other reception and a pair of drops. Miles, a Washington commit from Denver, shared MVP honors with his receiver after completing 7 of 8 passes for 155 yards and a TD. The East responded with a scoring drive keyed by a long fourth-down reception by Mike Davis of Stone Mountain, Ga. The West kicked a field goal to take a 24-6 lead into halftime. Spring Dekaney running back Trey Williams had an electrifying 85-yard TD catch on a screen pass called back by holding.
It was hard enough for 6-foot-5 wide receiver Corey Robinson to keep a low profile while going through workouts at Friday's U.S. Army National Junior Combine at the Alamodome. It was even harder with his 7-1 famous father — legendary Spurs center and Hall of Famer David Robinson — looking on.
Using coach Rudy Bernal’s familiar formula, the undersized Lanier Voks disrupted passing lanes with pesky defense and survived a late rally by the Brackenridge Eagles for a 46-40 District 29-4A victory Friday night.
San Antonio Independent School District trustees heard Superintendent Robert Durón on Thursday night echo the recommendation of a citizens' oversight committee: Keep the track at Alamo Stadium and move forward with the renovation. The board called a special meeting for Monday to vote on the stadium, whose work is two months behind schedule, which could mean higher costs.
High school all-star football game involving some of the best players in the country Sam Houston defensive lineman Javonte Magee and Smithson Valley punter Ethan Perry are on the West roster. Kiel, who is 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, threw for 2,523 yards and 28 touchdowns this season and was named Indiana's Gatorade Player of the Year. Sanders, the son of Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders, is one of eight sons of former NFL players in Saturday's game. Sanders, who rushed for 1,343 rushing yards and 27 total TDs his senior year at Oklahoma City's Heritage Hall, is expected to make his college commitment on Saturday. Darius Hamilton is the son of former Giants defensive lineman Keith Hamilton, and Zeke Pike's father Mark Pike was a Bills defensive end. The U.S. Army Player of the Year will be presented to one of six finalists at an awards dinner tonight. The finalists are wide receiver Stefon Diggs (Olney, Md.), wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham (Springfield, Mo.), defensive back Tracy Howard (Miramar, Fla.), offensive lineman D.J. Humphries (Charlotte, N.C.), defensive back Shaq Thompson (Sacramento, Calif.) and defensive back T.J. Yeldon (Daphne, Ala.).
U.S. Army All-American Bowl notebook Smithson Valley punter Ethan Perry didn't have a chance to get in the game before halftime but made the most of his three second-half punts. Perry said a coach timed his kicks, and two of them had a hang time of more than five seconds. After he played at tight end and punter for the Rangers, Perry said focusing on punting all week was a key factor. “This was probably the best game I've ever had punting,” said Perry, who is committed to TCU. “It was actually kind of refreshing to get hit,” Perry said. Saturday's crowd of 39,011 was an All-American Bowl record, beating the previous high of 37,893 for last year's game. The All-American Bowl announced 20 players who have already been selected for the 2013 edition of the game. Among the three Texas players on the list is quarterback Tyrone Swoopes of Class 2A Whitewright. After Saturday's game, Sam Houston defensive end Javonte Magee reflected on his best memory from the week — spending time with soldiers. “Hearing those war stories, that was the biggest thing for me,” Magee said. Among those in attendance were Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders — whose son played for the West team — Spurs legend David Robinson and U.S. Army Chief of Staff Raymond T. Odierno. The East team scored its first TD on a handoff to Kwontie Moore, who was listed on the roster at linebacker and played most of the game on defense. Moore, a Virginia commit, was a two-way player in high school in Norfolk, Va., rushing for more than 1,000 yards as a junior. Fourteen players announced their college commitments at Saturday's game (listed alphabetically):
Dorial Green-Beckham, the top recruit in the nation, holds the national receiving record and has drawn comparisons to Calvin Johnson.
With Stevens leading by double digits in the final minute of a win over O'Connor, Falcons point guard Nicole Salazar let a smile creep across her face after drawing a foul. “What is there to smile about when we can't make free throws?” Stevens coach Annissa Hastings yelled from the bench. Led by their second-year coach, Stevens has taken control of 27-5A, despite graduating one of the area's top scorers, Alexis Govan, who averaged 23.2 points per game and now plays at Western Kentucky. To make up for her loss, the Falcons have focused on balance — four players average at least 9.7 ppg — and a fast-paced attack on both sides of the floor.
Steele football coach could return to alma mater. Steele's Mike Jinks said he's heard his name for years as a candidate to be Judson's next head football coach. Steele's run included a 28-game winning streak from September 2010 to last month's Class 5A Division II state championship game. Rackley has recommended Judson defensive coordinator and interim head coach Mark Soto as his replacement.
Brandeis guard Justin Graham and the Broncos have been waiting for a breakthrough for a while.
SAISD board members voted 4-2 on Monday to keep the track and add a professional-sized soccer field at Alamo Stadium, despite protests and objections that argued the move's purpose is to bring in a professional soccer team. Somehow, all this political wrangling, the threat of lawsuits and months of debate have been over a potential second minor-league soccer team in this city. Garza tried to bring in Major League Soccer in 2005 when he was San Antonio's mayor and started a neighborhood youth soccer club. In Austin, a United Soccer League team was founded in 2008 and played at House Park, Austin ISD's historic stadium that opened in 1939 located a mile from the city's downtown. About $5 million was in place for cost overruns and $2.7 million for a building linking the stadium and the adjacent Alamo Convocation Center that would hold athletic department offices and concession stands. The bright side is that there will be a top-notch facility for SAISD's football, track and soccer players.
Boerne football coach Dane Johnson is leaving for Flower Mound, where he was named head coach on Monday, according to Boerne ISD athletic director Stan Leech.
Critics are pointing to rezoning request prior to SAISD board vote.
Churchill coach Cal Wulfsberg knew a matchup against Madison could be trouble for two reasons: his star point guard was nursing an injured ankle, and the much-improved Mavericks needed a signature victory. Churchill point guard Leslie Vorpahl, the team's leader in points and assists, played on the injured ankle, but didn't need to be 100 percent with Holub's early hot hand. Espinoza, a 6-foot-1 post, made a pair of baskets in the second quarter, including a crowd-pleasing crossover and layup at the end of the half to give Churchill a seven-point lead.
Express-News high school soccer preview Express-News high school soccer beat writer Terrence Thomas breaks down what to expect this season:
Wagner keeps control of Judson Since Wagner opened in 2005, its girls basketball team has never lost to Judson, its older district rival. Clark added a fast-break layup before the buzzer to make it 23-20 Wagner at halftime. [...] turnovers — 21 total — and foul trouble kept them from finding a rhythm. “I felt like we were really ready, but our inexperience and unnecessary fouls came back to bite us,” said Judson coach Triva Corrales, a former Wagner assistant.
Clark boys soccer coach Walter Rule earned his 300th career victory during the Cougars' 1-0 win against Boerne Champion on Friday at the New Braunfels tournament.
City says it based advice to the district on conversations that included pro sports.
According to Central Catholic freshman Jordan Murphy, the Antonian-Central rivalry might be the best in the area for high school sports. Murphy, a 6-foot-4 forward, scored 10 points to lead a group of three freshmen in the Buttons' rotation. Fabac, a senior who is one of just two returners who had significant playing time in last year's 35-6 season, said meshing with the freshmen has been a season-long work in progress that's now paying off. Escamilla, a 1998 Central Catholic graduate, was a starting guard on the Buttons' 1997-98 TAPPS state championship team.
In just their third varsity season, the Johnson girls advanced to the UIL Class 5A state tournament last season, losing 1-0 in the semifinals on a penalty kick to eventual state champion McKinney Boyd.
The day before Brandeis began district play last month, it hit coach Marc Gardner just how good Northside was going to be this season. No. 2 Warren (22-4, 5-2 27-5A) is considered a state tournament contender behind forward Taurean Waller-Prince (21.9 points, 10.0 rebounds per game), but the Warriors dropped to third place in the district after a setback to Brandeis on Monday. Taft, which was a state semifinalist last season, is in a three-way tie for fifth with Holmes and Stevens with 3-4 records.
Mayor Julián Castro said he wouldn’t support a request to change the zoning of Alamo Stadium to allow for pro sports.
With the boys basketball season around the midway point, Express-News beat writer Lorne Chan offers up some of the top storylines:
To her father, it didn't matter that Erica Hernandez wasn't a boy, let alone a baseball player. He nicknamed her "Goose" anyway, after his favorite pitcher, Hall of Fame reliever Rich "Goose" Gossage.
Record-setting running back Joseph Sadler of Devine has committed to play for Incarnate Word, his father said Saturday.
Stan Bonewitz’s coaching style was wildly successful with a 708-432 career record as a head coach, including 539 victories in 24 seasons at East Central before he retired in 2005.

The San Antonio Independent School District board voted late Tuesday to shelve plans by the Spurs to bring pro soccer to Alamo Stadium. In a brief introductory speech, newly minted board President Ed Garza, after mentioning the need to take bold steps, took one himself.
Brandeis' boys basketball team keeps racking up milestones this season, and Tuesday's 49-42 victory against Clark gave the Broncos a big one: Junior Justin Graham led No. 2 Brandeis with 14 points, and tough defense was the difference at Taylor Field House, as the Broncos are now in the District 27-5A lead with an 8-1 record. Perez caught fire in the third quarter, scoring nine of his team-high 13 in the period as the Cougars stayed within striking distance. Brandeis was content holding the ball, and a minute-long possession that lasted until the Cougars fouled with 30 seconds left helped seal the victory.
Jay rallied to upset the No. 2 Falcons 48-41 on Tuesday night at O'Connor High School. [...] it was Jay's defense that really shined, shutting out the Falcons in the period. Stevens missed seven shots — five 3-pointers — and had five turnovers in the third after having a 30-20 halftime lead. The Falcons' first second-half points came on a layup by Elexus Allen with 5:12 left in the game. After a timeout, Amezquita went coast-to-coast for a layup to clinch the victory.
Crockett WR Dominique Wheeler played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Waco La Vega DE Michael Starts is the biggest commit on defense, although he played on the offensive line at the U.S. Army Bowl.
Steele point guard Elena Gumbs has always been a basketball player first, but still considers herself a pretty good quarterback. The 5-foot-4 senior had the highlight of the game when she heaved a ball the length of the court to teammate McKenzie Calvert, who sank a 3-pointer from the corner. Steele made just two shots in the second quarter, but still held a 26-18 halftime lead. After a slow start, Steele has won 13 of its last 15 — even with a starting lineup that features just one senior (Gumbs), two sophomores and a freshman.

The Devine running back produced a monster one, rushing for 3,887 yards, breaking the state scoring record and carrying the Warhorses to the state quarterfinals. Gray (5-11, 190 pounds) and Williams (5-8, 175) both run sub-4.5-second 40-yard dashes to make up for their relative lack of size, and put up their impressive stats against bigger schools. The New England Patriots receiver was a small-school, all-everything star in Oklahoma whose physical makeup was nearly identical to Sadler's: 5-9, 180 pounds, 4.55 in the 40. [...] earlier this month, a Roadrunners assistant met with him to say two other players had committed, leaving them without a spot for Sadler. UIW is 45 minutes from home and, as the school has expressed its desire to join the Southland Conference, could move to Division I before his eligibility ends. Due to its high tuition and limited number of scholarships, UIW rarely gives out full rides, but Sadler said he's more than happy with the school's offer. If anything, UIW gives him the opportunity to play immediately, as he figures to be four-year starter Trent Rios' backup. The desire to make up for coming up short in a 2010 playoff loss drove him to work toward his incredible 2011 season.

Jefferson senior Venus Rich was determined to have a happier ending at this year’s District 29-4A swim and diving meet. After all, last year turned out to be one of those days most swimmers would like to forget. A disqualification in the 200-yard freestyle relay cost Jefferson’s girls a district title. Thursday night, the Mustangs made amends by soaring to the girls’ crown at SAISD Aquatics Center.

Thanks to Boclair's late heroics, No. 2 Brennan felt nothing but joy after pulling off a 62-55 overtime win over the Chargers at Champion High School to improve to 30-0. The 6-foot-1 sophomore starred with 19 points, 15 rebounds, three steals and two assists. The Chargers (24-6, 7-3 District 28-4A) challenged the Bears (30-0, 9-0), who allow 25.1 points per game, from long range. Willoughby made a fast-break layup to give Champion a six-point lead midway through the fourth. Champion had the ball with eight seconds remaining, but couldn't convert a layup.

Maurice Poullard, a cornerback from Blinn College, learned just how many strangers he has following his account after he announced his commitment to UTSA. Hill, like the majority of coaches, has had to try to advise players how to conduct themselves on a website he admittedly doesn't understand.
Aaron Moran and Gaby Colunga enjoyed being part of Brandeis' sweep of the District 27-5A boys and girls swim titles a year ago so much, they made it a point to help the Broncos stage a repeat. Moran earned gold medals in the 100-yard backstroke and 500 freestyle. Colunga had similar success, winning two individual events (200 free, 100 butterfly), while helping her team win the 200 and 400 free relays. After the Brandeis girls wrapped up their title, they had a chance to watch the boys follow suit with their win in the 400 relay. In addition to Brandeis' claiming of the titles, Marshall swimmer David Moore was named the District 27-5A Boys Swimmer.
Six area players were selected to the Texas Sports Writers Association's Class 5A All-State football team.
When Gary Green took over the Sam Houston football program four years ago, he wanted to use the sport as an avenue to college for his players, many of whom had never considered college an option. A standing-room-only crowd filled the school auditorium, along with the marching band and cheerleaders, to watch seven Sam Houston players sign letters of intent to play college football: In all, 79 area players signed scholarships Wednesday, including 24 for Football Bowl Subdivision schools. Magee, a U.S. Army All-American defensive end, shed tears as he thanked his coach, teachers and his adoptive mother, Mary Griffin, who found Magee as a baby abandoned in New Orleans. The biggest drama unfolded at Brandeis, where star cornerback Colin Blake announced his decision to sign with Florida State.

The Owls had a familiar name among their 24-member signing class Wednesday, landing the MacArthur running back, the younger brother of former Rice All-America and current Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Jarett Dillard. Darik Dillard, a Class 5A all-state running back who rushed for 4,100 yards in his prep career, attended a Rice football camp in San Antonio last summer before giving a verbal commitment in September. “Nate was really important to us because he's had snaps in a college football game,” Bailiff said of the first JUCO transfer in his six seasons at Rice.
South San head football coach Jeff Smith has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation that he sexually harassed a female coach.
In a rarity for the Longhorns, they also benefitted from a genuine last-minute surprise. Torshiro Davis, a four-star defensive end from Shreveport (La.) Woodlawn who'd spent a year committed to LSU, changed his mind Wednesday morning and signed a national letter of intent to play at UT.

LUBBOCK — Texas Tech on Wednesday picked up recruits from coach Tommy Tuberville's old stomping grounds in the Southeastern Conference. The Red Raiders, coming off their first losing season since 1992, announced the signings of 26 players from seven states, including South Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi and Florida. Tuberville said the staff looked for speed and quickness, with defensive and offensive linemen the biggest needs.
No. 10 Wagner used a dominating performance by Tesha Smith to defeat No. 7 Judson 43-35 on Tuesday night at Judson High School.
When East Central boys basketball coach Jeff Sweet changed his team's playing style this season, he wasn't sure how the Hornets would respond. East Central led the city in scoring 12 times in Bonewitz's 24 seasons as head coach from 1981 to 2005. “Teachers were stopping us in the halls and telling we brought back memories of the (1995) state championship year, when they broke 100 all the time,” Baker said. Baker, a 6-foot-4 senior, leads the team in scoring with 18.1 points per game, and he's one of four players averaging double figures.
Steele and Brennan became instant favorites. Familiar rivals Boerne Champion and Alamo Heights are together again. The University Interscholastic League announced its biennial district realignment Thursday, making changes that take effect for the 2012-13 school year. Among notable area shifts, Comal ISD schools Smithson Valley and New Braunfels Canyon moved up to Class 5A, while Highlands and Seguin dropped to Class 4A. With the districts set, Express-News staff writers Blake Hurtik and Lorne Chan give a glimpse of what to expect for the 2012 football season.
Had it simply been about winning its District 26-5A opener, the Churchill girls soccer team probably wouldn't have celebrated in a manner usually reserved for when a team wins some type of championship.

Churchill's Cory Bolleter would be the star on any other swim team, as a senior with the potential to medal in the 50-and 100-yard freestyle at the state swimming meet. Murray, who has signed with Texas, had slower times in preliminaries than Bolleter, but was able to take both freestyle races Saturday. Churchill coach Mark Jedow said he considered switching Murray and Bolleter's events to give the Chargers a chance at more golds but kept them in the freestyles, where they'll be favored at the state swimming meet Feb. 24-25.
Alamo Heights kept its tradition of winning district swimming championships going by sweeping the District 28-4A titles Saturday at Palo Alto Aquatics Center. Brennan coach Will Scofield hopes his Bears got one started after claiming the 30-4A boys and girls crowns in their second year of competition. Led by 28-4A Male Swimmer of the Meet Ian LeMaistre, Alamo Heights had a 179-125 edge over Boerne Champion. LeMaistre earned gold medals in the 200-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke for the fourth year in a row, while swimming on Heights' winning 200 and 400 free relays. “Some people felt the boys wouldn't be as good because we lost Luke (Shaw), but we're just as strong if not stronger,” Heights coach Mel Allick said.

Hays will forfeit Tuesday's boys basketball game against Smithson Valley because it scheduled too many non-district games, according to Smithson Valley coach R.J. Strauch.
Despite the early-morning practices and often grueling workouts, Reagan coach Mike Sansavera never has had to wonder whether Colleen Konetzke would be at the pool. With sprinters Alexa Morris (Texas A&M) and Cori Gary (Liberty University) graduated, Konetzke became the default leader for the new-look team of freshman Kristina Domaschofsky and juniors Sarah Gibson and Mary Margaret Soderberg. “I take pride in being a role model,” Konetzke said. The Rattlers are the top qualifiers in the 200 and 400 free relays heading into regionals and hope for another strong performance at state. Konetzke enrolled at Reagan as a freshman after having attended private schools her entire life.
Putting playoff picture into focus The girls basketball playoffs start next week, and there's no shortage of intriguing storylines. Brennan coach Randy Evans can admire the Bears' undefeated regular season, calling the accomplishment “gratifying.” “Just stick with it, work hard, and I guarantee we'll make the playoffs your senior year,” Gant said. The Lady Minutemen, led by seniors Krystal Campos, Ruth Gutierrez and Karoline Rodriguez, went 10-6 in district play to make the playoffs for just the third time in school history. When Reagan and Churchill ended the regular season tied for first place in District 26-5A, Rattlers coach Terry Barton initially wanted to play for the top seed. If the regular season proved anything, it's that the area 5A teams are evenly matched. The Mules' three girls basketball coaches all left after last season, and budget restrictions meant he couldn't hire replacements. The Mules (18-15) made the playoffs for the first time since 2008 thanks in part to the play of senior Sally Stecher (11.8 ppg) and junior Jackie Cabello (9.4).
Locals make leap into state Judson senior diver Danielle Shedd was making her third and final appearance at the Region VII swimming and diving championships. Shedd won the girls gold medal with a 489.35-445.85 edge over Reagan's Kristen Connolly, while Law outpointed another Reagan diver, Nathan Gonzales, 497.65-486.25 on Thursday night at Davis Natatorium. Shedd, a University of Houston signee, had plenty of motivation after missing out on a trip to state last year with a third-place finish at regionals. Earlier in the day in boys 4A diving, Alamo Heights' Finn and Aiden Scribbick qualified for state.

“Being able to compete in athletics at the collegiate level is something I've dreamed about,” said Padalecki, who cleared 16 feet, 1 inch last year. Since the signing, a weight's been lifted off my shoulders.
Sarah Gibson touched the wall and looked up to the scoreboard expecting to see a second or third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle. The Reagan junior had edged teammate Colleen Konetzke by a hundredth of a second to win the event and spur the Rattlers to the team title at the Region VII-5A swimming championships Saturday at Davis Natatorium. On the boys side, Churchill dominated the meet en route to its 23rd regional championship. Texas-bound senior John Murray brought home four gold medals, winning the 50 and 100 freestyles and anchoring the Chargers' 200 and 400 free relays. Holmes' Connor Hennessy won the 500 free by half a second, despite having the second-slowest qualifying time. The Jaguars edged favored Reagan by 0.18 seconds in the 200 free relay, and Riley Marks won the 200 individual medley and the backstroke.
Mules sweep, back up coach's premonition All season, and especially in the days leading to the Region VII-4A championships at Davis Natatorium, Alamo Heights coach Mel Allick talked about having a premonition. The boys opened the meet with Lemaistre — the male swimmer of the meet — Andrew Cotton, Christopher Spears and Austin Frey combining to take the 200-yard medley in a meet-record 1 minute, 36.47 seconds. “Starting off with a win (in the 200 medley relay) was definitely good,” said Lemaistre, who took the silver in the 100 backstroke to Lake Travis' Reid Elliott, who finished in 49.78 and broke former Churchill standout and Olympic gold-medalist Josh Davis' 6-year-old pool record of 50.34.
Madison star eyes one elusive goal Madison senior Tyler Gonzales always has been a baseball prodigy. The nephew of Washington Nationals scout Jimmy Gonzales, he has a fastball that hits 94 mph.
In a coaching career that has spanned nearly three decades, Highlands' Janice Alexander has seen her share of breathtaking moments on the track. While most of those occasions usually came during a big meet, the one that defines senior Jourdan Doffeny didn't have high stakes or a large crowd.
After going 32-0 en route to the 140-pound division title last season, the Judson senior was moving up two weight classes (152 pounds) and was determined to keep his winning streak going. Walker left no doubt he was the best of his weight class by breezing to the title at Saturday's Region IV meet at Littleton Gym. The top four finishers in each boys' and girls' weight class advanced to the state meet Feb. 24-25 in Austin. Walker, voted Region IV Boys Wrestler of the Year, showed his dominance in the finals in winning by a technical fall over Chris Giddings of Leander. The Judson wrestler credits going against teammate Dominic Zaleski, who finished second in the 182-pound class, in practice as a major factor.
It took a second-half rally, overtime and a win in a dramatic shootout, but Antonian is headed back to the TAPPS Division I state tournament for the first time since 2009.
O'Connor saw a soft-spoken sophomore grow into the area's most dominant player during its run to the Class 5A state finals last season. Urbany, the 2011 Express-News Player of the Year, alone makes O'Connor a district title contender. The Huskies return most of their team that missed the playoffs on a fourth-place tiebreaker loss.
Keene drained the three to force overtime, then scored seven points in the extra period to lead No. 3 Warren to an 82-76 victory over No. 2 Brandeis. Keene's performance lifted the Warriors and helped them survive foul trouble to leading scorer Taurean Waller-Prince in front of about 1,000 at Taylor Field House. A 5-foot-9 junior guard, Keene was in his fourth game back after missing six weeks because of an ankle injury. Waller-Prince, who is averaging 21.8 points and 10.9 rebounds, picked up three fouls in the first quarter and was called for his fourth just 30 seconds into the second half.
Wagner pulled out a 59-58 double-overtime victory to eliminate Johnson, with the Thunderbirds' Tesha Smith making the game-clinching defensive play.
Costley, who averages 6.5 points per game, scored 21 in the first half, helping Brandeis (25-11) to its first playoff victory in school history. The Broncos built a 42-24 halftime lead by scoring easy layups in transition after beating the Bobcats' press. Senior guard Rose Maldonado added 20 points, and nine other Broncos scored. With Canyon star guard Chamaya Turner facing constant double-teams, Kelsey Flanagan and Jackie Schaake picked up the slack, each scoring 14 points in a Class 4A bidistrict matchup in the early game at Littleton. [...] it's playoff time, and I'll play through anything.

In the last year, San Antonio Christian's Emily Duke has grown 3 inches, from 5-foot-4 to 5-7. Perhaps her most important growth spurt, though, hasn't been a physical one. It's been the one that has transformed her from a quiet freshman to a do-it-all leader.
Will Patterson's death has shaken the Churchill community, where he was a varsity football player.
S.A. Christian missed a penalty kick with three seconds remaining, denying it an opportunity to extend to overtime a game in which it faced two-goal deficits on three different occasions. Jonathan Orasanu had scored his second goal of the game — a blast from near midfield that increased Grapevine Faith's advantage to 4-2 with six minutes left. [...] Gerlinger trimmed S.A. Christian's deficit to 4-3 after converting a penalty kick after a handball with 3:46 left. [...] with three seconds left, and after S.A. Christian had sent all of its players forward in hope of registering a tying goal, Odom was whistled for a foul inside the penalty box.
San Antonio Christian coach Stephanie Kass is pleased with the progress the Lions' swim team has made the past three years. The roster expanded to 17 (nine boys, eight girls), and the strength in numbers showed during Saturday's TAPPS Division II State Meet at Davis Natatorium. In addition to earning two gold medals in individual events, Christian's boys finished second to Houston Second Baptist, while the girls placed fifth. In the girls' division, Nicole Kass won the 500 free and teamed with twin sister Kristin, who was third in the 100 back, Sara Brown and Paulina Macias for second in the 200 free relay. El Paso Cathedral dominated the boys' Division I by totaling 343 points.
Trailing New Braunfels by a point Friday, the Knights had drawn up a play for leading scorer C.J. Siples. The 6-foot-5 senior took the biggest shot of his career. Vrana sent Steele to the postseason with his buzzer-beater, giving the Knights a 46-45 victory in a playoff for fourth place in District 25-5A. After enduring a 6-27 record last season in which Steele was winless in district, the Knights (16-17) clinched a playoff berth.
[...] for the second time this week, the energetic sophomore could barely find words to describe another improbable victory. The T-birds (23-13) will face Churchill in the regional quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Monday at UTSA. After a Wagner turnover, the Mustangs (21-15) milked the clock down to 20 seconds but missed the front end of a one-and-one. The T-birds missed a layup with less than 10 seconds left, but collected the rebound and kicked it out to Moncada, who swished the shot. The Mustangs still had three seconds after the shot, but Wagner guard Adriane Davis, who had six steals, knocked the ball out of a Jay shooter's hands at the buzzer.
Even during the tough times this season – well, the tough times by her program's lofty standards – Reagan girls soccer coach Frankie Whitlock focused on the bigger picture.
John Murray has tried to embrace the comparison. He knows that Jimmy Feigen set the standard by which he or any other Churchill sprinter will be judged.
Central Catholic football coach Chris Roberts resigned this week after a rocky season with the Buttons. He guided Central to a 6-5 record, but his tenure was marked by controversy surrounding his hiring and a scouting incident involving a Buttons assistant.
Wagner didn't need any miracles this time. No last-second 3-pointers. No double overtime. The Thunderbirds beat Churchill 56-52 in the Class 5A third round Monday at the UTSA Convocation Center in relatively normal fashion.
There's no exact blueprint for what Brennan's girls basketball team is trying to accomplish. “I have to stop and slap myself sometimes to remember how incredible this is,” Brennan coach Randy Evans said. The list of undefeated football and basketball champions in area history is a short one. Bonewitz said the Hornets were so good because they established an up-tempo style of play and perfected it. The Bears pride themselves on their lockdown defense, allowing 25.9 points per game. Then-Roosevelt coach Bryan Dausin said the Rough Riders realized their potential when they beat Judson in the regular season. After beating Judson, then we started talking about winning a state championship. Canyon (Texas) coach Joe Lombard nearly has perfected the art of getting young players to stay focused despite immense success.
Wagner has been the area's most successful boys basketball program over the past five seasons, with two state tournament appearances in that span and entering Tuesday coming off its third straight district championship.
